Share Your World 12 June 2017

Here are my answers to this week’s Share Your World from Cee

What do you do when you’re not working? If you are retired, what do you do that is not part of your regular daytime routine?

Routine?  What routine?   That’s the beauty of being retired or rather I am still so newly into it that I am rebelling and do not have a proper routine!  So when people ask me – What do you do all day – I don’t have an acceptable answer.  I will, however, attempt to answer this question by telling you loosely what I do with my time when not travelling.

  • Check what’s happening on Facebook
  • Check emails and text messages – reply to them
  • Decide whether I need to call anybody
  • Some time during the day I fit in an Italian Lesson on Duolingo -I’m on an 85 day streak!
  • Walk for exercise
  • Walk to the shops
  • Read blogs and write blogs
  • Take lots of photographs
  • Spend time editing photographs
  • Read on my tablet
  • Do the usual household chores – slowly
  • Do some gardening
  • Go for drives with hubby to bird watch
  • Go out for coffee or breakfast at least twice a week
  • Entertain visitors – we often have them
  • Often go away on short and long trips
  • Do sudoku
  • Do crossword puzzles
  • Knit and crochet – but not at the moment.
  • Watch TV – only at night
  • Listen to Podcasts or the radio but only when walking (earphones) or doing chores
  • Write in my diary.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

If I won millions on the lottery I wouldn’t tell anybody. I’d be like a secret millionaire and look for needy causes.   I would try to find individuals that have a need rather than donating to an organised charity.  For example;  if I sleuthed out a young couple who wanted to start a business but couldn’t get a loan from the bank, I would get them started. Or there was a kid with potential who couldn’t afford tertiary education, I’d pay his fees. I’d look for people who needed life-saving surgery and pay for it – that type of thing. The only problem is that I never buy lottery tickets so unless I start buying them I’m never going to win!

What makes you laugh the most?

The things my grandchildren say.

What is your biggest pet peeve with modern technology?

I don’t have peeves with modern technology.  I love modern technology. I am so glad I made it to the future. Okay – my peeve is – why don’t more older people embrace modern technology with glee – it’s what we dreamt about when we were kids!

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful for the storm that brought some much needed rain but am sad for those who suffered from the devastation that stormy weather inevitably brings.   We were on the road moving toward the storm area so missed having to drive in it.  We also missed being delayed by the fires in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay which occurred at the same time as the storms. It was not a good time for the Western Cape.  However, it’s just amazing how South Africans have joined together to help bring relief to those affected.

I am looking forward to the Youth Day weekend and Father’s Day when my daughter will be visiting us.

  1. I’m glad the storm didn’t get you 🙂
I LOVE what you wrote ” I would try to find individuals that have a need” and I feel the same. You could just do amazing things for people. Help them get a leg up, fix a problem.

  2. My mother (76 years old) has a smartphone and loves it! She can text her kids and grandkids, send and receive photos, shop on Amazon….we call her “techno-Grandma”

  3. Your routine – seems like just the kind that I will be following when I retire :D. Loved your winning the lottery answer 🙂

  4. Your “routine” sounds similar to mine. I am finding that there is a huge divide between those of us who are older and retired and who use technology and those who don’t.
